The forest type of Efate is dominated with low forests followed by mid-height forest and thickets. Large percentage of the low land area on the West, South and Southeast part of the island were converted to coconut plantation, cattle grazing and settlement while on the North and Northeast are converted to shifting cultivation and settlement.

Proposed sustainable yield of 5,000m3/yr from natural forests, mobile sawmill operations on agricultural patches to 1,500m3/yr.

Efate is the center of development in Vanuatu having to accommodate national government’s administration including the Cabinet, the Parliament, the Judiciary and the capital Port Vila. With the highest urban population and minimum of avenues for resources to meet the growing demands, Efate’s natural resources is seemingly exploited in a steady fast rate.

Tourism activities on Efate are on the rise with existing 4 to 5 star major hotels and resorts and the main port for cruise tourism to Vanuatu. Port Vila also accommodates most of the national technical educational institutions including the University of the South Pacific and the Australia Pacific Technical College.
